A bill, sponsored by Senator Caesar Trunzo, was signed into law. The bill established the first Tuesday in May as an annual day of tribute known as “New York State Teacher Day”.
The commemoration of teachers first began in 1953, when former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt persuaded the 81st Congress to proclaim a National Teacher Day. This day was established to recognize the tremendous work of America’s educators. Since the first National Teacher Day in 1953, the National Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) has designated the first full week of May as Teacher Appreciation Week, and the National Education Association now recognizes Tuesday of that week National Teacher Day.
“By establishing the New York State Teacher Day as a Day of Commemoration, we can properly honor and recognize the contributions teachers make to our local communities here on Long Island,” said Senator Trunzo.
